Solution

  1. If the source of the immunity originates with an injection or a fluid that is inhaled or swallowed, then it is termed to be: Artificially Acquired Active Immunity. This type of immunity is acquired when a person is given a vaccine or an immunization that stimulates the body to produce its own antibodies against a specific pathogen.

  2. If the person creates his or her antibodies after exposure, then the immunity is termed: Naturally Acquired Active Immunity. This type of immunity occurs when a person is exposed to a live pathogen, develops the disease, and becomes immune as a result of the primary immune response.

  3. If the source of the immunity originates within a person's own body or from a mother to her baby, then the immunity is termed: Naturally Acquired Passive Immunity. This type of immunity is "borrowed" from another source and it lasts for a short time. For example, a baby receives antibodies from the mother through the placenta before birth and in breast milk following birth. This passive immunity protects the baby from some infections during the early years of their life.

  4. If a person is given antibodies, the immunity is termed: Artificially Acquired Passive Immunity. This type of immunity is acquired through the direct injection of antibodies from the serum of an immune individual into a non-immune individual. This could be used if there has been a sudden outbreak of a disease or if a person has been exposed to a disease that they have not been previously immunized against.
