Solution

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides four types of volumes:

  1. General Purpose SSD (gp2 and gp3): These are suitable for a broad range of workloads, including small to medium-sized databases, development and test environments, and boot volumes.

  2. Provisioned IOPS SSD (io1 and io2): These are designed for I/O-intensive workloads, particularly database workloads, that require low-latency, high-throughput, and sustained IOPS performance.

  3. Throughput Optimized HDD (st1): These are designed for frequently accessed, throughput-intensive workloads that require fast, predictable throughput, such as big data, data warehouses, and log processing.

  4. Cold HDD (sc1): These are designed for less frequently accessed workloads, large, sequential I/O operations, such as colder data requiring fewer scans per day.

So, in total, EBS provides four types of volumes.
