Zimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west and southwest, Zambia to the northwest, and Mozambique to the east and northeast. The country's capital and largest city is Harare.
The area that is now Zimbabwe was first inhabited by Bantu-speaking Iron Age farmers from the 4th century CE. From the 13th to the 15th century, the area was home to the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, known for its stone architecture and trade routes with Asia and the Middle East.
In the late 19th century, British imperialist Cecil Rhodes arrived in the region, leading to the establishment of the British South Africa Company. In 1898, the region was named Southern Rhodesia after him. The country was self-governing under British rule until 1965 when the white minority government unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia.
The country went through a brutal civil war known as the Rhodesian Bush War or the Zimbabwe Liberation Struggle. In 1980, the country gained international recognition as the independent Republic of Zimbabwe.
Robert Mugabe, a key figure in the war of independence, became the country's first Prime Minister and later its President. His rule, which lasted from 1980 to 2017, was marked by economic mismanagement, widespread corruption, human rights abuses, and a decline in living standards.
