  1. Carbon-14 Formation: Carbon-14 (C-14), a radioactive isotope of carbon, is naturally produced in the atmosphere through the interaction of cosmic rays with nitrogen-14.

  2. Absorption: Living organisms absorb carbon, both ordinary carbon (C-12) and carbon-14, through photosynthesis (for plants) or eating (for animals). As long as the organism is alive, the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-14 remains relatively constant.

  3. Death of the Organism: When the organism dies, it stops absorbing carbon. The carbon-14, however, continues to decay at a known rate.

  4. Measurement: By measuring the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-14 in a sample and comparing it to the ratio in a living organism, it is possible to determine the time of death of the organism.
