The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the residual heat from the Big Bang, the event that started our universe. It's a faint cosmic "afterglow" that fills all of space, and it can be detected in every direction we look. The CMB is a snapshot of the oldest light in our Universe, imprinted on the sky when the Universe was just 380,000 years old.

The discovery of the CMB was a monumental event in the development of modern cosmology. In 1965, two American radio astronomers, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, were working on a new type of antenna at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. They were trying to eliminate all sources of noise from the antenna, but no matter what they did, there was always a low level of noise, a faint background hum, that couldn't be removed.

After ruling out all possible earthly sources for the noise, they realized that what they were hearing was radiation coming from outside our galaxy. They had accidentally stumbled upon the CMB. Their discovery provided strong evidence for the Big Bang theory and earned them the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics.
