Solution

The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) is a hormone system within the body that is essential for regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. Its primary purpose is to maintain homeostasis, or stability, in these areas. It does this by adjusting the volume of fluids in the body, the amount of salts, and by constricting or dilating blood vessels.

The process by which this pathway ultimately produces aldosterone is as follows:

  1. When blood pressure drops, the kidneys respond by releasing an enzyme called renin into the bloodstream.

  2. Renin then acts on a protein called angiotensinogen, which is produced by the liver and released into the blood. Renin cleaves angiotensinogen to produce angiotensin I.

  3. Angiotensin I is then converted into angiotensin II by an enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which is found in the lungs.

  4. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, meaning it constricts the blood vessels and thereby increases blood pressure. It also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands.

  5. Aldosterone acts on the cells of the kidneys, causing them to reabsorb more sodium and water from the urine. This increases the volume of fluid in the body, which also helps to increase blood pressure.

  6. Once blood pressure is restored to normal, this feedback loop is inhibited, reducing the production of renin and thus, aldosterone.

This system is a key regulator of blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.
