Solution

The electronic configuration of a hydrogen (H) atom is 1s1. When two hydrogen atoms combine to form a H2 molecule, each hydrogen atom shares its 1 electron with the other to form a covalent bond. Therefore, the electronic configuration of a H2 molecule is (σ1s)^2, where the superscript 2 indicates the two shared electrons.

The bond order of a molecule can be calculated using the formula:

Bond Order = 0.5 * (Number of electrons in bonding orbitals - Number of electrons in antibonding orbitals)

For a H2 molecule, there are 2 electrons in the bonding orbital (σ1s) and no electrons in the antibonding orbital. Therefore, the bond order is:

Bond Order = 0.5 * (2 - 0) = 1

So, the bond order of a H2 molecule is 1, which indicates a single bond between the two hydrogen atoms.
