The hydrological cycle, also known as the water cycle, is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves several key stages:

  1. Evaporation: This is the process by which water changes from a liquid state to a gaseous state. It primarily occurs in the oceans, seas, and other large bodies of water due to the heat from the sun.

  2. Transpiration: This is the process by which water is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Evaporation and transpiration together are known as evapotranspiration.

  3. Condensation: As water vapor rises into the air, it cools and condenses to form tiny droplets, which group together to form clouds. This is the process of condensation.

  4. Precipitation: When the cloud particles become too heavy to remain suspended in the cloud, they fall back to the earth's surface as precipitation. This can be in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

  5. Infiltration: Some of the water that falls as precipitation soaks into the ground, a process known as infiltration. This water might be taken up by plants, or it might continue to seep down into the earth to recharge aquifers.

  6. Runoff: Water that does not infiltrate into the ground or evaporate back into the atmosphere moves across the land and ends up in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This is known as runoff.

  7. Storage: Some of the water will be stored in lakes, reservoirs, or oceans until it is evaporated and the cycle begins again.

These components work together to circulate water throughout the Earth's system, from the atmosphere to the surface and below ground.
