Solution

Blood is a specialized body fluid in humans and other animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and transports metabolic waste products away from those same cells. It is composed of blood cells suspended in blood plasma. Here are the main components of blood and their roles:

  1. Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): These are the most common type of blood cell and the body's principal means of delivering oxygen to the body tissues. They pick up oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to cells all around the body, then pick up carbon dioxide from the cells and unload it in the lungs, where it's exhaled.

  2. White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): These are the cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. They identify, destroy, and remove pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants in the body.

  3. Platelets (Thrombocytes): These are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage and form a plug, or clot, to repair the damage.

  4. Plasma: This is the liquid component of blood, in which the blood cells are suspended. It makes up about 55% of the body's total blood volume. It is mostly water (up to 95% by volume), and contains dissolved proteins, glucose, mineral ions, hormones, carbon dioxide, platelets, and blood cells themselves. It serves as a transport medium for delivering nutrients to the cells and carrying waste products away from them. It also helps maintain blood pressure and regulate body temperature.

  5. Hemoglobin: This is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. Hemoglobin is made up of four protein molecules (globulin chains) that are connected together.

  6. Antibodies: These are proteins produced by the immune system to neutralize pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. They are found in the plasma.

Each of these components plays a crucial role in the body's function and overall health.
