This hormone further stimulates the endometrium to prepare for potential implantation of an embryo. The endometrium becomes even thicker, and the glands secrete nutrients that will sustain an embryo for the first few days after implantation. If no implantation occurs, the corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone levels drop, and the endometrium is shed, beginning the menstrual phase again.
