Solution

(i) Ion Formation: Hydrogen: Hydrogen loses one electron to form a positive ion (H+). Alkali Metals: Alkali metals also lose one electron to form a positive ion (M+). However, the process is easier for alkali metals due to their larger atomic size and lower ionization energy compared to hydrogen.

(ii) Reducing Power: Hydrogen: Hydrogen has a moderate reducing power. It can reduce metals and non-metals. Alkali Metals: Alkali metals have a higher reducing power than hydrogen. This is because they can easily lose an electron due to their low ionization energy.

(iii) Reaction with Oxygen: Hydrogen: Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to form water (H2O). Alkali Metals: Alkali metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides (M2O, MO2, or M2O2 depending on the metal). The reaction is often vigorous and exothermic.

(iv) Oxide Formation: Hydrogen: Hydrogen forms water (H2O) when it reacts with oxygen, which is a neutral oxide. Alkali Metals: Alkali metals form metal oxides when they react with oxygen. These oxides are basic in nature.
