Solution

The assertion (A) is incorrect while the reason (R) is correct.

The potential energy of an electron is negative when it is in a region of negative electric potential and positive when it is in a region of positive electric potential. This is because the electric potential energy (U) of a charge in an electric field is given by U = qV, where q is the charge and V is the electric potential. Since the charge of an electron is negative, the potential energy is negative when V is positive and vice versa.

The reason (R) is correct. Electrons, being negatively charged, do move from a region of higher potential to a region of lower potential. This is due to the force exerted on them by the electric field, which pushes them against the direction of increasing electric potential.
