List the possible interactions between Earth’s crustal plates that can occur at their boundaries

Solution

There are three main types of interactions that can occur at the boundaries of Earth's crustal plates:

  1. Convergent Boundaries: This occurs when two plates move towards each other. If the two plates are of equal density, they usually push up against each other, forming a mountain range. If they have different densities, one plate typically subducts, or slides under the other. This can create deep ocean trenches and volcanic activity.

  2. Divergent Boundaries: This happens when two plates move away from each other. As they separate, magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap. This can create mid-ocean ridges and new crustal material.

  3. Transform Boundaries: This occurs when two plates slide past each other horizontally. The friction caused by this movement can trigger earthquakes. The San Andreas Fault in California is an example of a transform boundary.
