Solution

When borax (sodium borate) is heated with ethyl alcohol (ethanol) and concentrated sulphuric acid, it undergoes esterification to produce ethyl borate and water.

Here are the steps:

  1. Borax reacts with sulphuric acid to produce boric acid and sodium sulphate. Na2B4O7 + H2SO4 -> 4H3BO3 + Na2SO4

  2. The boric acid then reacts with ethanol in the presence of sulphuric acid (which acts as a dehydrating agent) to produce ethyl borate and water. 4H3BO3 + 3C2H5OH -> B(OC2H5)3 + 7H2O

So, the final product of heating borax with ethyl alcohol and concentrated sulphuric acid is ethyl borate and water.
