Solution

(a) MnO2 + 4HCl  MnCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2

In this reaction, MnO2 is reduced to MnCl2 and HCl is oxidized to Cl2. Therefore, MnO2 is the oxidizing agent (as it gains electrons) and HCl is the reducing agent (as it loses electrons).

(b) H2S + SO2  S + H2O

In this reaction, H2S is oxidized to S and SO2 is reduced to H2O. Therefore, H2S is the reducing agent (as it loses electrons) and SO2 is the oxidizing agent (as it gains electrons).

(c) CuO + C  Cu + CO

In this reaction, CuO is reduced to Cu and C is oxidized to CO. Therefore, CuO is the oxidizing agent (as it gains electrons) and C is the reducing agent (as it loses electrons).
