Their main role in a living organism is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. However, their capacity for division and differentiation is less than that of embryonic stem cells.

In summary, both embryonic and adult stem cells have the ability to divide and differentiate, but embryonic stem cells have a higher potential for differentiation into various cell types compared to adult stem cells.
