Solution

Breathing in humans involves a process known as inhalation, which is the intake of air into the lungs. Here's a step-by-step explanation of how this process occurs:

  1. Initiation: The process begins when we decide to take a breath. The brain sends a signal to the muscles involved in breathing to start contracting.

  2. Diaphragm and Intercostal Muscles Contract: The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the base of the lungs, contracts and moves downwards. At the same time, the intercostal muscles (located between the ribs) contract and move the rib cage upwards and outwards. This increases the space in the chest cavity.

  3. Decrease in Pressure: As the chest cavity expands, the pressure inside it decreases. This creates a pressure difference between the chest cavity and the outside air.

  4. Air Rushes In: Due to this pressure difference, air from the outside rushes into the lungs through the nose or mouth, down the trachea (windpipe), and into the bronchi and bronchioles, finally reaching the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs).

  5. Gas Exchange: In the alveoli, oxygen from the inhaled air passes into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide (a waste product from the body's cells) passes from the bloodstream into the alveoli.

  6. Relaxation: The diaphragm and intercostal muscles then relax, reducing the space in the chest cavity and increasing the pressure. This leads to exhalation, or the release of air from the lungs.

This entire process is repeated with each breath we take, allowing us to continuously take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.
