The theory of continental drift, proposed by Alfred Wegener, suggests that the Earth's continents were once a single land mass or supercontinent, which he named Pangaea. Over millions of years, this supercontinent broke apart and the individual pieces, or continents, drifted to their current locations. This movement is caused by the activity of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's crust. The evidence supporting this theory includes the similar shapes of continents like South America and Africa, which seem to fit together like puzzle pieces, as well as the presence of similar plant and animal fossils and rock formations found on continents that are now far apart. This theory has revolutionized our understanding of the Earth's geological history and the forces that shape its surface.
