Pernicious anemia is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to absorb enough vitamin B12 from the diet due to a lack of intrinsic factor. This can be caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body's immune system attacks the cells in the stomach that produce intrinsic factor.

Here's the relationship: The oxyntic glands in the stomach produce intrinsic factor. If these glands are damaged or destroyed (as can happen in conditions like pernicious anemia), the body can't produce enough intrinsic factor. Without intrinsic factor, the body can't absorb vitamin B12, leading to a deficiency. This deficiency can cause pernicious anemia, which is characterized by large, immature red blood cells.
