How is the President of India elected

The President of India is elected by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both houses of Parliament, as well as the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union territories, in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. The voting at the Presidential election is by secret ballot. Here are the steps:

1. Formation of Electoral College: The President is elected by an electoral college, which includes the elected members of both houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union territories.

2. Nomination: Any person eligible to become President can be nominated for the position by any member of the electoral college, provided that the nomination is seconded by another member. The candidate must also deposit a nomination fee.

3. Campaigning: After the nominations are finalized, the candidates campaign for votes from the members of the electoral college.

4. Voting: The voting at the Presidential election is by secret ballot. The members of the electoral college cast their votes in a preferential order.

5. Counting of Votes and Declaration of Results: The votes are counted by the Election Commission of India. The candidate who receives more than half of the total valid votes is declared the winner. If no candidate receives more than half of the votes, the process is repeated until a winner is found.

6. Oath of Office: The President-elect takes the oath of office administered by the Chief Justice of India. The President-elect swears to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law" and to devote himself/herself to the service and well-being of the people of India.
