Solution

During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards into the thoracic cavity. The external intercostal muscles also relax, causing the rib cage to move downwards and inwards. This reduces the volume of the thoracic cavity, increasing the pressure inside the lungs and forcing air out.
