Solution

Sedimentary rocks are classified into four main categories, including:

  1. Clastic Sedimentary Rocks: These are formed from the compacting of small particles, or clasts, of other rocks. The particles can range in size from tiny grains to large boulders. Examples of clastic sedimentary rocks include sandstone (formed from sand-sized particles) and conglomerate (formed from large, rounded clasts).

  2. Chemical Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks form when minerals precipitate out of a solution, usually water, and settle to the bottom. Over time, these particles compact and form rocks. Examples include rock salt (formed from the mineral halite) and some limestones (formed from the mineral calcite).

  3. Organic Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks form from the accumulation of plant or animal debris. Examples include coal (formed from plant debris) and some types of limestone (formed from the shells of sea creatures).

  4. Biochemical Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks form from the activity of water-dwelling organisms. These organisms can extract minerals from the water and use them to build their shells and other hard parts. When these organisms die, their remains can accumulate and form rocks. Examples include some types of limestone and chalk (both formed from the shells of microscopic marine organisms).
