Solution

C. Several U.S. airliners were taken over by terrorists. On September 11, 2001, a group of al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airplanes. Two of these planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon, the Department of Defense headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was initially flown toward Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. It was the deadliest terrorist act in world history and prompted a massive U.S. response, domestically and internationally.
