Solution

The two main types of sunscreens are chemical and physical sunscreens.

  1. Chemical Sunscreens: These sunscreens work by absorbing the sun's rays. They contain organic (carbon-based) compounds, such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, which create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin. They are often more comfortable to wear because they are usually lighter and rub in more easily.

  2. Physical Sunscreens: Also known as mineral sunscreens, these work by sitting on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin. They contain active mineral ingredients, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These sunscreens are often thicker and may leave a white residue on the skin.

Additional Sun Protection Advice:

  1. Wear Protective Clothing: This includes long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, when possible.

  2. Seek Shade: The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
