Solution

  1. Classification: Amphibians are a group of cold-blooded vertebrates that includes frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. Reptiles are a group of cold-blooded animals that includes turtles, alligators, crocodiles, lizards, and snakes.

  2. Skin Type: Amphibians have smooth, moist skin that is permeable to water and gases, making them reliant on habitats with plenty of water. Reptiles, on the other hand, have dry, scaly skin that is not permeable, allowing them to live in a wider range of environments, including dry ones.

  3. Life Cycle: Amphibians have a two-stage life cycle. They begin life as water-dwelling, gill-breathing larvae (like tadpoles) and undergo metamorphosis to become land-dwelling, lung-breathing adults. Reptiles, however, have a single-stage life cycle. They are born or hatched as miniature versions of their adult forms and do not undergo metamorphosis.

  4. Reproduction: Most amphibians lay their eggs in water and the eggs are usually without any hard protective covering. Reptiles, however, lay hard-shelled eggs on land. Some reptiles also exhibit live birth.

  5. Temperature Regulation: Both amphibians and reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on the environment to regulate their body temperature. However, reptiles are more efficient at controlling their body temperature than amphibians.

  6. Respiration: Adult amphibians breathe through lungs and their skin. Reptiles breathe only through their lungs.

  7. Heart Structure: Amphibians have a three-chambered heart (two atria and one ventricle), while reptiles (except for crocodilians) also have a three-chambered heart, but with a partially divided ventricle. Crocodilians, like birds and mammals, have a four-chambered heart.
