What was the difference between Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore in their approach towards education and nationalism?

Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, both were prominent figures in Indian history, but they had different views on education and nationalism.

1. Approach towards Education:

   • Mahatma Gandhi: Gandhi's approach to education was practical and based on the principles of 'learning by doing'. He introduced the concept of 'Nai Talim' or 'Basic Education' which emphasized on the overall development of a person. He believed that education should be closely related to the environment and should focus on the development of body, mind and spirit.

   • Rabindranath Tagore: Tagore, on the other hand, had a more holistic and global approach to education. He established the 'Visva-Bharati University' with the aim of creating a place where the world can meet in one nest. He believed in the freedom of learning and the importance of creativity and imagination. His approach to education was more focused on the aesthetic and spiritual development of a person.

2. Approach towards Nationalism:

   • Mahatma Gandhi: Gandhi was a staunch nationalist who believed in the concept of 'Swaraj' or self-rule. He led the Indian National Congress and the Indian people in the struggle for independence from British rule. His approach to nationalism was based on non-violence and civil disobedience.

   • Rabindranath Tagore: Tagore, however, had a different view on nationalism. He was critical of the aggressive and destructive aspects of nationalism and believed in universalism and internationalism. He was more of a humanist and believed in the unity of humanity beyond national boundaries.
