Solution

  1. After leaving the small intestine, undigested food enters the large intestine, also known as the colon.

  2. In the colon, water and electrolytes (like sodium and chloride) are absorbed from the undigested food. This process helps to form stool.

  3. The colon also contains bacteria that break down the undigested food further, producing gases and additional waste products.

  4. The undigested food, now mostly in the form of stool, moves through the colon to the rectum. This movement is facilitated by muscular contractions known as peristalsis.

  5. The rectum stores the stool until it is ready to be expelled from the body.

  6. When the rectum is full, the body signals that it is time to have a bowel movement. The stool is then expelled from the body through the anus.

  7. If the body is unable to expel the stool, it can lead to constipation. On the other hand, if the stool moves too quickly through the colon and not enough water is absorbed, it can result in diarrhea.

  8. The process from when food enters the mouth until it is expelled from the body as stool is known as digestion.
