Solution

The main goal of the digestive system is to deconstruct food into its most simple form, so cells can use these materials. This process begins in the mouth where food is broken down into smaller pieces by chewing and saliva. The food then travels down the esophagus into the stomach, where it is further broken down by stomach acid.

Next, the food moves into the small intestine, where most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs. The walls of the small intestine are lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for absorption. The nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells throughout the body.

The remaining undigested food moves into the large intestine, where water and electrolytes are absorbed. The leftover waste material is then eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus.

So, while the digestive system does also help filter toxins and eliminate waste, its main goal is to break down food into a form that the body's cells can use.
