Economic sectors can be classified into three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

1. Primary Sector: This sector involves the extraction and production of raw materials, such as coal, wood, iron, and corn. The outcomes of this sector are usually used as inputs for other industries. Examples of businesses in the primary sector include agriculture, mining, forestry, farming, grazing, hunting and gathering, fishing, and quarrying.

2. Secondary Sector: This sector involves the transformation of raw or intermediate materials into goods e.g. manufacturing steel into cars, or textiles into clothing. At this stage, it becomes still more capital intensive and less labor intensive. Examples of businesses in the secondary sector include automobile manufacturing, textile production, and construction.

3. Tertiary Sector: This sector involves the supplying of services to consumers and businesses. This includes services like advising, banking, retail, education, and health. The tertiary sector is also known as the service sector.

The importance of each sector changes as an economy develops. In developing economies, the primary sector usually plays a significant role. As the economy grows and develops, the secondary sector becomes more important as manufacturing increases. In developed economies, the tertiary or service sector becomes the most significant sector.

Reasons for the changing importance of business classification include:

• Technological advancements: As technology improves, more processes become automated, reducing the need for labor-intensive industries such as those in the primary sector.

• Economic development: As an economy develops, there is often a shift from primary and secondary sectors to the tertiary sector. This is because developed economies tend to have a higher demand for services such as healthcare, education, and professional services.

• Globalization: Global trade and outsourcing can lead to a decrease in manufacturing jobs in developed economies, leading to a greater emphasis on service-based industries in the tertiary sector.

• Changes in consumer demand: As incomes rise, consumers often demand more services leading to growth in the tertiary sector.
