Holland's Theory of Career Choice, also known as Holland's RIASEC model, is a theory that suggests that people are attracted to different career paths based on their personalities. The theory identifies six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC).

  1. Realistic: These individuals are often practical, physical, hands-on, and stable. They prefer to work with objects, machines, tools, plants or animals, and to be outdoors.
  2. Investigative: These individuals are often thoughtful, analytical, intellectual, complex, and independent. They prefer to work with ideas, theories, facts, or data.
  3. Artistic: These individuals are often original, independent, expressive, and creative. They prefer to work with forms, designs, and patterns.
  4. Social: These individuals are often helpful, cooperative, empathetic, and kind. They prefer to work with people to enlighten, help, train, or cure them, or are skilled with words.
  5. Enterprising: These individuals are often adventurous, ambitious, assertive, extroverted, and energetic. They prefer to work with people, influencing, persuading, leading or managing for organizational goals or economic gain.
  6. Conventional: These individuals are often efficient, careful, conforming, organized, and conscientious. They prefer to work with data, have clerical or numerical ability, carry out tasks in detail, or follow through on others' instructions.

According to Holland, people will search for environments that let them use their skills and abilities, and express their attitudes and values, while taking on enjoyable problems and roles. Behavior is determined by an interaction between personality and environment.

Applying this theory to myself, I would first identify which of the six personality types I most closely align with. For example, if I identify as an 'Investigative' type, I might be drawn to careers in science, research, or academia. Understanding my personality type can help me make more informed decisions about my future career and seek out environments in which I am likely to succeed and be satisfied.
