Solution

In order for a human to be able to flex their arm, the following must happen:

  1. The flexor muscles must be stimulated to contract.
  2. The extensor muscles must be inhibited.

These two actions allow the arm to bend at the elbow. The flexor muscles on the front of the arm shorten, pulling the forearm up towards the shoulder, while the extensor muscles on the back of the arm are relaxed or inhibited to allow this movement.
