Solution

The octane and cetane numbers are measures of the performance of an engine or aviation gasoline. The higher the octane or cetane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating.

  1. n-Heptane: It is used as a zero point of reference in the octane rating scale. So, its octane number is 0. However, it has a cetane number of 56, which is relatively high.

  2. Iso-octane: It is used as a 100 point of reference in the octane rating scale. So, its octane number is 100. Its cetane number is quite low, around 15.

  3. Benzene: It has a high octane number, around 100. Its cetane number is very low, around 15.

  4. n-Octane: It has a relatively low octane number, around 20. However, it has a high cetane number, around 80.

So, in increasing order of octane number, the compounds are: n-Heptane, n-Octane, Benzene/Iso-octane.

In increasing order of cetane number, the compounds are: Benzene/Iso-octane, n-Heptane, n-Octane.
