When a metal reacts with concentrated nitric acid, hydrogen gas is not evolved. This is because concentrated nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent. It readily donates oxygen atoms to the metal, oxidizing it and forming metal ions. The hydrogen gas that would normally be evolved in a typical metal-acid reaction is instead oxidized by the nitric acid to form water and nitrogen oxides. Therefore, the reaction between a metal and concentrated nitric acid does not result in the evolution of hydrogen gas.
