State two ways in which each of the following factors cause depletion of soil resources:(i) burning(ii) leaching

Solution

(i) Burning:

  1. Destruction of Organic Matter: When vegetation is burned, the organic matter in the soil is destroyed. This organic matter is crucial for maintaining soil structure, fertility, and moisture retention. Its loss leads to a decline in soil quality and productivity.
  2. Loss of Nutrients: Burning releases nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into the atmosphere as gases, rather than allowing them to be recycled back into the soil. This results in a significant reduction of essential nutrients available for plant growth.

(ii) Leaching:

  1. Nutrient Loss: Leaching occurs when water percolates through the soil, dissolving and carrying away soluble nutrients such as nitrates, potassium, and magnesium. This process depletes the soil of essential nutrients needed for plant growth.
  2. Soil Acidification: Leaching can also lead to soil acidification. As water removes basic cations (like calcium and magnesium) from the soil, it leaves behind acidic components, which can lower the soil pH and negatively affect plant health and soil microbial activity.
