The error in the student's score was 83 - 63 = 20 marks.

This error of 20 marks increased the average score of the class by 1/2.

Therefore, if we divide the total error by the amount it increased the average, we can find the total number of students.

So, 20 (total error) ÷ 1/2 (amount it increased the average) = 40 students.

Therefore, there are 40 pupils in the class.
