Solution

When sodium enters the axon membrane at the beginning of an action potential, it does so by passive transport. This process is specifically known as diffusion. During an action potential, the inside of the neuron becomes positively charged due to an influx of sodium ions. This is not an active process - the neuron does not expend energy to bring in the sodium ions. Instead, the sodium ions move from an area of high concentration (outside the neuron) to an area of low concentration (inside the neuron) through ion channels, which is why it's considered passive transport.
