Explain how a contraceptive implant works

A contraceptive implant is a small, thin rod that's inserted under the skin of your upper arm. Here's how it works:

1. Insertion: A healthcare provider inserts the implant under the skin of your upper arm. This is usually done with a special applicator and under local anesthesia, so it's not painful.

2. Release of hormones: Once inserted, the implant releases a hormone called progestin into your body.

3. Prevention of ovulation: The progestin prevents your ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation). If no egg is released, you can't get pregnant.

4. Thickening of cervical mucus: The hormone also thickens the mucus in your cervix. This makes it harder for sperm to reach an egg, if one is released.

5. Thinning of uterine lining: Progestin can also thin the lining of your uterus. This makes it less likely that a fertilized egg can attach to the uterus to grow.

6. Duration: The implant can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years. After that, it needs to be replaced.

7. Removal: If you decide you want to get pregnant or you don't want to use the implant anymore, a healthcare provider can remove it. After removal, your ability to get pregnant returns quickly.
