Solution

According to Newton's first law, an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. In space, there is no gravity or air resistance to slow down the hammer. Therefore, once the astronaut releases the hammer, it will continue to move in the direction it was going when released, at the same speed, indefinitely or until it is acted upon by another force.
