Tuckman's theory, also known as Tuckman's stages of group development, suggests a linear progression through four stages: forming, storming, norming, and performing. However, in practice, this linear progression is not always the case.

1. Forming: This is the initial stage where team members meet each other and start to understand the task at hand. They are usually polite and excited to start the work.

2. Storming: This stage involves conflict and competition as individual personalities and roles emerge. Team members may challenge each other, and the task at hand.

3. Norming: The team starts to resolve their differences, appreciating each other's strengths and respecting the leader.

4. Performing: The team is now mature, organized and well-functioning. The focus is on reaching the goal as a group.

In reality, teams can move back and forth between these stages rather than progressing linearly from one stage to the next. For example, a new member joining the team might cause the team to revert to the storming stage. Or, a sudden change in the project might cause the team to go back to the forming stage. Therefore, while Tuckman's theory provides a useful framework to understand team dynamics, it does not always reflect the non-linear and complex nature of team development in practice.
