Question
(i) Distinguish between the following with a chemical test: [2]
(a) MnO2 and CuO (b) Dil H2SO4 and Dil HCl
Solution
(a) MnO2 and CuO
Manganese dioxide (MnO2) and Copper(II) oxide (CuO) can be distinguished using hydrogen gas. When hydrogen gas is passed over heated MnO2, it gets reduced to Mn2+ and water is formed. However, CuO does not react with hydrogen gas.
Chemical reaction for MnO2: MnO2 + H2 -> Mn + 2H2O
(b) Dil H2SO4 and Dil HCl
Dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) can be distinguished using barium chloride (BaCl2) solution. When BaCl2 solution is added to dilute H2SO4, a white precipitate of barium sulfate (BaSO4) is formed. However, no precipitate is formed when BaCl2 solution is added to dilute HCl.
Chemical reaction for H2SO4: BaCl2 + H2SO4 -> BaSO4 (white precipitate) + 2HCl
