How did the Tokugawa maintain control of Japan?

The Tokugawa Shogunate maintained control over Japan through several methods:

This meant that while local lords, or daimyos, maintained their lands, they were required to spend every other year in the capital city of Edo (now Tokyo). 2. Control of Foreign Relations and Trade: The Tokugawa Shogunate also maintained control by limiting foreign influence and controlling trade. They implemented a policy of national seclusion, or Sakoku, which severely limited the ability of foreigners to enter Japan and of Japanese people to leave. This helped to prevent the spread of Christianity, which the shogunate viewed as a threat to their power, and also allowed the shogunate to maintain control over trade.

3. Social Hierarchy: The Tokugawa Shogunate maintained a strict social hierarchy, with samurai at the top, followed by farmers, artisans, and merchants. This hierarchy helped to maintain order and control, as each class had specific roles and responsibilities.
