The fires have consumed 10.6 million acres and have destroyed 200 structures, including 151 homes. The intensity and fast movement of these fires have forced the evacuation of 16,000 residents from their homes, with additional evacuation orders to come in the next few days. The smoke caused by these wildfires has recorded the worst air quality reports for the Eastern United States in decades, issuing air quality warnings for the major metropolitan areas of New York City and Boston. The causes of the fires are under investigation but appear to be accidental. To mitigate future fires, there is a provincewide ban on open fires, with a prohibition of $25,000 for breaking the burn ban. This ban on opening burning will remain in effect for an undetermined amount of time. The fire season in Canada runs from May-October. Such destruction from wildfires this early in the season is rare, and the most likely contributing factor is the drought experienced and the record heat recorded for April. Eastern Canada, such as Nova Scotia, is less prone to wildfires compared to the West due to the vegetation and climate. Assistance with fire suppression efforts has been provided by the United States, deploying equipment and 600 firefighters and support personnel.
