In the traditional Hindu caste system, what can you do without accruing negative karma to move up the social ladder in your current life?

In the traditional Hindu caste system, it is believed that one's caste is determined by their past life actions or karma. Therefore, moving up the social ladder in one's current life is not typically possible. The caste system is hereditary and one is born into their caste.

However, one can strive to live a virtuous life in accordance with dharma (duty/ethics) to accrue positive karma. This includes fulfilling one's duties and responsibilities associated with their caste, living a moral and ethical life, showing respect and kindness to all beings, and practicing devotion to God.

It's important to note that the caste system has been officially abolished in India, and discrimination based on caste is illegal. However, social and economic disparities still exist.

In the broader philosophical context of Hinduism, the ultimate goal is not to move up the social ladder, but to attain moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. This is achieved through a life of righteousness, meditation, devotion, and self-realization.
