Solution

Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies that are unconsciously used to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was one of the first to develop theories on these defense mechanisms. His daughter Anna Freud also made significant contributions to this field.

There are several types of defense mechanisms. Here are a few examples:

  1. Denial: This is probably one of the most recognized defense mechanisms. It involves a person refusing to accept reality or facts, acting as if a painful event, thought, or feeling did not exist.

  2. Repression: This is another well-known defense mechanism. Repression acts to keep information out of conscious awareness. However, these memories don't just disappear; they continue to influence our behavior.

  3. Projection: This defense mechanism involves attributing our own unacceptable thoughts, feelings, and motives to another person.

  4. Displacement: This involves taking out our frustrations, feelings, and impulses on people or objects that are less threatening.

  5. Regression: This is a return to earlier stages of development and abandoned forms of gratification belonging to them, prompted by dangers or conflicts arising at one of the later stages.

  6. Sublimation: This is a defense mechanism that allows us to act out unacceptable impulses by converting these behaviors into a more acceptable form.

These are just a few examples, and there are many other types of defense mechanisms that people use to cope with anxiety and protect their ego.
