An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. Here are the steps it takes:

  1. Detection: When attached to a person, the AED first analyzes the person's heart rhythm. It's looking for one of two specific conditions: ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. These are irregular heart rhythms that can be fatal if not treated immediately.
