Question

Calculate the molar mass of the following substances:(a) Ethyne, (C2H2) (b) Sulphur molecule, (S8)

Solution

(a) Ethyne (C2H2): The molar mass of a substance is calculated by adding up the molar masses of all the atoms in its molecular formula. The molar mass of carbon (C) is approximately 12.01 g/mol and that of hydrogen (H) is approximately 1.01 g/mol.

For ethyne, we have 2 carbon atoms and 2 hydrogen atoms. So, the molar mass of ethyne is:

(2 * 12.01 g/mol) + (2 * 1.01 g/mol) = 24.02 g/mol + 2.02 g/mol = 26.04 g/mol

(b) Sulphur molecule (S8): The molar mass of sulphur (S) is approximately 32.06 g/mol.

For a sulphur molecule, we have 8 sulphur atoms. So, the molar mass of a sulphur molecule is:

8 * 32.06 g/mol = 256.48 g/mol

So, the molar mass of ethyne (C2H2) is 26.04 g/mol and that of a sulphur molecule (S8) is 256.48 g/mol.
