Indigenous science refers to the wide body of knowledge that indigenous people have developed over thousands of years through direct contact with the environment. This knowledge is specific to a location and includes the relationships between plants, animals, natural phenomena, landscapes and timing of events that are used for lifeways, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, trapping, agriculture, and forestry.

It is a system of knowledge about the natural world, and a wealth of knowledge and technology existing in indigenous communities around the world.

This knowledge is integral to a cultural complex that also encompasses language, systems of classification, resource use practices, social interactions, ritual and spirituality. These unique ways of knowing are important facets of the world's cultural diversity, and provide a foundation for locally-appropriate sustainable development.

Indigenous science is not static, and changes over time as communities adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, it is a dynamic, living knowledge system that continues to grow and evolve as people learn and adapt to changes in the environment and technology.
