Question
How did suffering and evil come into the world? Describe in your own words the story of the Fall.
Solution
The story of the Fall, as described in the Bible, begins with the creation of the world and the first humans, Adam and Eve, by God. God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, a paradise where they had everything they needed and were free to enjoy all of its fruits, except for one - the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned them that eating from this tree would result in death.
However, a serpent, often interpreted as Satan, tempted Eve to eat the fruit, arguing that it would not lead to death but would make her like God, knowing good and evil. Eve succumbed to the temptation and ate the fruit, and also gave some to Adam, who also ate it.
As a result of their disobedience, they became aware of their nakedness and felt shame. When God found out what they had done, He cursed the serpent and punished Adam and Eve. Adam was condemned to a life of hard labor, and Eve was condemned to the pain of childbirth. They were both banished from the Garden of Eden.
This event, known as the Fall, is seen as the moment when suffering and evil entered the world. Before the Fall, Adam and Eve lived in a state of innocence and bliss. After the Fall, they and all their descendants were subject to sin, suffering, and death.
