2 major types of biodiversity
Question
2 major types of biodiversity
Solution
Biodiversity can be broadly classified into two main types:
-
Genetic Biodiversity: This refers to the variation of genes within a species. It is the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species. It is distinguished from genetic variability, which describes the tendency of genetic characteristics to vary.
-
Species Biodiversity: This refers to the variety of different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms existing and interacting in an ecosystem. This diversity is seen not only in the number of distinct species but also in the variety of different communities formed by different species.
In addition to these, there is also a third type known as Ecosystem Biodiversity which refers to the diversity of a place at the level of ecosystems.
