In a bar magnet, like poles repel each other. This means that if you try to put two north poles together, they will push each other away. The same goes for two south poles. This is due to the magnetic field lines that exit from the north pole and enter through the south pole. When like poles are brought together, the field lines conflict and cause a repelling force.
